How Does the Halloween Scavenger Hunt for kids Work?

The idea is simple: print the scavenger hunt sheet and head outside to see what Halloween decorations you can spot.

Depending on where you live, you might find pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons, witches, spiders and all sorts of wonderfully spooky decorations.

But rather than simply looking for a list of Halloween objects, the hunts encourage children to look carefully at the decorations around them.

Can they find a pumpkin that isn’t orange?
Can they spot a bat hanging upside down?
Can they find a spooky face hiding in a window?

It’s a great way to turn an ordinary walk into a Halloween adventure.

And because there are two versions, you can choose the one that best suits your child’s age and ability.

🎃 Halloween Scavenger Hunt for Younger Kids

The younger children’s version uses simple things to spot, making it suitable for younger children who may still be developing their reading skills.

Children can look for Halloween favourites such as:

🎃 A pumpkin
👻 A ghost
🕷️ A spider
🦇 A bat
🧙 A witch
💀 A skeleton
🕸️ A spider web
🏠 A spooky house
🕯️ A glowing lantern

You don’t have to find everything in one go.

If you’re going for a walk around your neighbourhood, simply take the sheet with you and tick things off as you spot them.

Make it easier for little ones

You could read the clues aloud as you walk, allowing younger children to concentrate on spotting the objects rather than reading the words. The Scavenger hunt sheet for younger children also has pictures for those children not yet able to read.

For children who enjoy taking photographs, you could also turn it into a Halloween photo scavenger hunt and let them take a picture of each item they find.

Older children can have a little more of a challenge.

Instead of simply finding a pumpkin or a ghost, they need to look closely at the decorations and find something that matches the description.

Can they find:

A pumpkin that isn’t orange
A bat that is upside down
A skeleton wearing something
A witch riding something other than a broom
A spider web with something caught in it
A Halloween decoration that is glowing
A monster with a funny expression
A house with more than three Halloween decorations
A purple Halloween decoration
A spooky face hiding in a window
A decoration that moves
Something spooky that you can only spot if you look closely

This version is designed to make children pay attention to the small details in the decorations they see.

It can also make the hunt surprisingly competitive!

Want to make it even harder?

Turn it into a timed challenge.

Give everyone 30 minutes and see how many items they can find.

Or make it a photo challenge where children have to take a photograph of each item as proof.

Just remember to be respectful of people’s homes and gardens — the aim is to spot the decorations, not go onto private property.

The great thing about a Halloween scavenger hunt for kids is that you don’t need to make it a huge event.

It can be:
