Looking for a calm summer holiday idea at home that doesn’t involve constant activity or screens?

This Family Spa Day at Home is a gentle, low-cost way to slow things down — perfect for those days when everyone feels a little tired, overwhelmed, or in need of a reset.

Not every day needs to be busy.

Sometimes the most memorable moments come from quiet, cosy, connected time together.

Why a Spa Day Works So Well During the Holidays

The summer holidays can be long.

And while activity days are fun, they can also be overstimulating — especially if you’re trying to fill every hour. And lets face it, who doesn’t want a quiet, calm and relaxing day dressed up as an experience? Surely, it’s a win-win situation.

A spa-style day:

  • Encourages calm and relaxation
  • Helps regulate energy levels
  • Works for all ages
  • Requires very little prep
  • Gives everyone a break (including you)

It’s a beautiful way to balance out busier days.

💆‍♀️ Family Spa Day at a Glance

Best for: Reset days, rainy afternoons, slower summer days
Ages: 3–12 (adaptable)
Budget: Very low
Prep time: 10–15 minutes
Indoor-friendly: Yes

🍓 Morning: Welcome to the Spa

Start the day by setting the tone.

You don’t need anything fancy — just a small shift in atmosphere.

1. Create a “Spa Welcome”

Play soft music.
Dim the lights slightly.
Speak a little more slowly and gently.

You could hand out a Spa Leaflet with the order of the day to set expectations.

That alone changes the mood.

2. Simple Breakfast “Buffet”

Make breakfast feel a little special without extra work.

Ideas:

  • Fruit skewers
  • Toast with toppings
  • Croissants
  • Yogurt and granola
  • Smoothies or juice

Serve in:

  • Small bowls
  • A tray
  • Or even plastic “fancy” glasses

Adding a paper umbrella or straw can make it feel like a treat. You want to aim for calm and relaxed with minimal effort.

🛁 Midday: The Pamper Station

This is the heart of your spa day.

Keep it simple, gentle, and optional.

1. Foot Soak Station

You’ll need:

  • A washing-up bowl or basin
  • Warm water
  • A drop of bubble bath or soap

Optional extras:

  • Towels
  • A few slices of cucumber
  • Soft music

Let children soak their feet and relax.

It feels novel — and encourages them to slow down.

2. Mini Treatments

Choose one or two — no need to do everything.

Easy Options

  • Hand massage with moisturiser
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Nail painting
  • Brushing and styling hair

Keep it playful, not perfect.

3. DIY Face Mask (Optional)

A very simple, gentle option:

  • Plain yogurt
  • Small drizzle of honey

Apply lightly and rinse after a few minutes.

(Always check for sensitivities first.)

Children usually find this hilarious — especially with cucumber slices.

🍽 Lunch: Room Service

Try making lunch feel a bit more special and fun by offering a ‘Room Service’. This could be served in their actual rooms or if your kids are younger and less tidy, like mine, it could be done in the living room as a special treat.

1. Let Them Order

You could provide a simple hotel style room service order sheet for them to choose from.

Keep it simple:

  • Sandwiches
  • Wraps
  • Fruit
  • Snacks

Write down their ‘Order’ like it would be done in a real hotel or spa environment.

2. Deliver Their Food

Serve their food on a tray either in their rooms if you are comfortable with that, or in the living room. If it is sunny outside, you could bring it out to them to enjoy in the garden. Call it: “Room service delivery!”

This small detail adds a lot of magic.

🫧 Afternoon: Pool Time or Bubble Bath Calm

Now you can gently choose your energy level.

Option 1: Paddling Pool (If Warm)

If it’s warm outside, get the paddling pool out, add some water and a few toys and let your kids enjoy some gentle water play.

Option 2: Bubble Bath Spa

If the weather isn’t playing ball, you can always have a nice relaxing, warm bath. Add some nice bubbles, soft lightening and calm music. You could create a spa playlist ahead in time either on your own or together with your children.

You could even add some glow sticks (supervised) for extra fun.

Bonus point is that you can get them straight into their PJs afterwards and have them ready for bed.

📚 Evening: Cosy Wind-Down

End the day softly.

1. Quiet Time Together

Finish the day off gently by reading books, some quiet colouring time or listening to an audiobook. If you are new to audiobooks, you can try one for free through Amazon Audible. Some of our favourites are:

Or you could just have a quiet chat cozied up on the sofa with some blankets, cushions and low lighting.

2. Calm Family Film (Optional)

If you want to include a movie, choose something gentle and familiar.

Keep the atmosphere relaxed and cozy, include some favourite snacks.

This is about winding down, not stimulation.

If You’re Tired (Very Low-Prep Version)

This one is made for those days.

Just do:

  • Slow morning
  • Bubble bath
  • Film
  • Early night

That’s enough. If you have younger kids that need to burn off a little energy, try adding some low level structured activities. I have some ready made printable activity sheets you could use for that very reason.

If You Have Mixed Ages

This day works well for children of all ages. If you have younger children, concentrate on short pamper sessions, water play and simple snacks. Older Children can help setting up the spa and create the menus or help “run” the treatments for their younger siblings.

Giving them responsibility works really well here.

Make It Feel Extra Special

There are two simple things you can do to add something special to your day and make it feel like more than just an activity you do at home.

🎟 Spa Entry Pass

Create a special Spa Entry Pass and hand it over at Breakfast. If you don’t want to make one yourself, you can download and print the FREE VIP Spa Guest ticket I’ve created instead.

👕 Dress Code

You’re at the spa, so dress appropriately. It’s a perfect excuse for a pyjama day. Put on your dressing gown for a more authentic feel or if you prefer, just wear your favourite comfy clothes.

This instantly signals a slower day.

Why This Is Perfect for the Summer Holidays

When every day feels busy, a calm day stands out.

A Family Spa Day:

  • Gives everyone a reset
  • Reduces overstimulation
  • Encourages connection
  • Requires almost no prep
  • Balances more active days

It’s a gentle pause in the middle of the holidays.
