A Simple Halloween Activity That Kids Love

My kids love a treasure hunt, so I really couldn’t resist making one specifically for Halloween. One of my favourite things about Halloween is that it doesn’t have to be complicated to feel magical. A handful of clues, a few hidden treats, and a little imagination can turn an ordinary afternoon into an exciting adventure.

This Halloween indoor treasure hunt printable is designed to be quick for parents to set up and genuinely fun for children to solve. You simply print the clues, hide them around your home, and give your child the first clue to start the hunt.

The printable includes three different difficulty levels, so you can use the same activity with children of different ages.

What’s Included

Your free printable includes:

• Ages 3–5: Simple rhyming clues with easy-to-recognise household locations.
• Ages 6–10: Slightly trickier rhyming riddles that encourage problem solving.
• Ages 10+: More atmospheric clues with a little extra challenge.

Each version contains 12 clues that lead children through the house before ending at a final Halloween treasure.

Where the Clues Lead

The hunt takes children to familiar indoor locations, including:

• Front door
• Coat rack or wardrobe
• Fridge
• Sofa
• Bookshelf
• Bathroom sink
• Dining table
• Laundry basket or washing machine
• Bed
• Toy box
• Oven or microwave
• Final treasure hiding place – I have left a blank space there for you to write your chosen location.

Because the locations are common in most homes, the hunt works well for last-minute Halloween plans or a rainy afternoon when you want to keep them occupied for a while.

How to Set Up the Treasure Hunt

Setting up the hunt takes just a few minutes.

1. Print the clue sheet for your chosen age group.
2. Cut out the clue cards.
3. Hide each clue in the location shown on the answer key.
4. Don’t forget to hide some treasure at your chosen treasure spot.
5. Give Clue 1 to your child.
6. Watch them race around the house solving each spooky riddle!

For younger children, you can read the clues aloud. Older children usually enjoy solving them independently or competing in teams.

Halloween Treasure Ideas

The final treasure doesn’t need to be elaborate. Some easy ideas include:

• Mini bags of sweets
• Chocolate coins
• Halloween stickers
• Glow sticks
• Small toys
• Temporary tattoos
• A Halloween activity book
• A homemade “monster mix” snack bag

I love using a small pumpkin bucket or cauldron as the treasure container because it makes the ending feel extra special. I also usually put an activity type treasure in as that extends the activity beyond the treasure hunt. My kids particular love the biscuit decorating kits you can get from the supermarket. It means we get a treasure hunt, biscuit activity and a sweet treat at the end. Activity books or a small game are also good options for the same reason.

Why This Works for Different Ages

If you have siblings, it can be difficult to find a Halloween activity that everyone enjoys. That’s why I created three separate clue sets rather than a one-size-fits-all version.

The younger clues focus on rhyme and recognition, while the older versions include more descriptive language and simple riddle-solving. You can even run the hunt multiple times during October by switching to a harder clue sheet or mix them up so that siblings can take turns in solving the clues based on their age and ability.
